Welland Juniors followed up their league championship success by becoming the first winners of the 'Trophy World' Cup at Langland Stadium on Sunday.
Welland, able to field virtually a full squad for the first time in a month, welcomed back the prolific Sam Black but even so the early exchanges were a little tentative, with both teams taking time to settle into the game. The best chances in the early stages fell to DAR but their finishing let them down.
As the game progressed, Welland began to settle into their stride with the midfield trio of Alex Edwards, Lee Manion and David Chapman starting to impose themselves on the game. The breakthrough for Welland came shortly before half-time when Sam Black broke clear, his shot was only partially blocked by the keeper and David Holmes was able to force the ball home.
DAR went in search of the equaliser but were denied on the stroke of half time by a fine save from the keeper James Patterson.
Welland came out for the second half in a much more positive mood, putting DAR defence under pressure from the start.
Man of the match James Thompson, in a tactical switch of position to centre forward, created all sorts of problems for DAR, leaving Sam Black free to make some darting runs down the left. David Holmes also saw more ball and made some excellent runs on the right. It was from one of these that the second=d goal came midway through the second half. The ball was slipped inside to Alex Edwards who calmly flicked it up and volleyed over the stranded DAR keeper.
DAR put more urgency into their attacks were confidently dealt with by the solid Welland back four Ben Teague (sub Stuart White), Oliver Rimell, Scott Kitchener and Chris Bunn. Both teams should be congratulated on an excellent cup tie.
